Employment expert Jason Sheehan talks to veterans from an employer’s point of view. He talks about how employers cannot afford to make hiring mistakes.
“That’s why we would rather do a better job screening upfront with proper candidates. Those proper candidates, a lot of times could be a veteran.”
He also touches on the fact that often time veterans are not selling themselves the way they should be in order to get that job they want.
“As a veteran, when I came home, I was able to get a job, but I put myself out there. I was open to taking any job I had to in order to provide for myself and my family. In doing that, it opened the door. Being a veteran will open the door for you, if you know how to get the door open, then the rest is up to you.”

David: As a business owner, you’re in business to make money. If you don’t make a profit as a business owner, you’re not in business anymore, and you don’t have employees to begin with.
Jay: Pretty much. If you think about it this way, as an employer, I’m going to expend X to employ you. Let’s say it’s $50,000 all in. How many of whatever I’m selling do I need to sell to cover that $50,000 a year?
As an employer, we can’t afford to make those mistakes of hiring the wrong person out of the gate. That’s why we would rather do a better job screening upfront with proper candidates. Those proper candidates, a lot of times could be a veteran.
But as veterans, sometimes we’re not really good at marketing ourselves. A lot of times we think that just because we’re a veteran, an employer owes us something. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
As a veteran, when I came home, I was able to get a job, but I put myself out there. I was open to taking any job I had to in order to provide for myself and my family. In doing that, it opened the door. Being a veteran will open the door for you, if you know how to get the door open, then the rest is up to you.
